Any ideas to help loneliness/homesickness at college?I've joined a few clubs and I'm in a suite on campus with 6 people (too many in my opinion). I just don't feel like I can connect with these people I go to school with since it is a very small business college and everyone seems to just be into partying (which is boring after a while). I seem to be the only one in the area with my interests and I feel lonely. I dont think it helps that I also turned in my roommate for bringing back alcohol to the room without asking if it was ok or not and the whole campus found out and shunned me a bit.
I also miss hanging out at my favorite spots back home, like driving down the lonely country roads, a relaxing day on the beach, or a midnight Subway run (I moved to a big city in South FL, its a big change). Sometimes I feel like I don't belong at all here…sometimes I call myself stupid for thinking that since there's nothing at all for me at home, whereas here there is opportunity to have a chance at a better future. I don't know what to do!
I can't seem to find much off campus that interests me either.
My friends won't visit. I just want a few people to hang with when it gets boring when I'm done with my studies and have nothing to do.
I can't go home to visit (its almost $500 and overnight by car) either. It's really sucking, but no other school offers the same courses as this is the only school in the nation with these majors.
Alot of people use this to their advantage and dive head first into their studies. You picked this school for a reason, go back to your original plan and analyze what has really changed. ALOT of people use their first years at school to unplug from mom and dad, it sounds like you have your head on straight and need only wait for the rest to catch up. You made it a goal to go there, dont let memories of the past divert you from your goal. With all the methods of communication at your fingertips you should have no trouble keeping in touch. Perhaps invite a friend or two to visit?References : Former student
If the life on campus does not interest you, see if you can get involved in something off campus. Depending on your time (and needs) you could get a part-time job. Or you could get involved in a religious organization (church/synagogue/mosque) or a volunteer organization. Some towns/cities also have clubs and events, for instance if you like music you could join the local chamber choir, band, or symphony, or – since it sounds like you came from a more rural area – if you like animals and the country life you could join the local 4-H chapter. Think of the clubs you've joined on campus or in high school and find an off campus equivalent, if you joined the school newspaper and it doesn't ring your bell, get involved in the town newspaper.
If you are able, go home every so often, or if not, visit a place like your home. Get in your car – or find someone if you don't have one – and take a drive to a beach or to find a country road. If you really dislike it that much, you might consider transferring, being at a highly acclaimed school is nice but not worth suffering for. Good luck!References : I work at a college in a rural area which is a big culture shock for a lot of our students who come from the city. I see homesick students all the time.
get into church and get around people more like you. see if you can qualify for hud apartment near college. not all hud is bad. dont let people tell you that you dont qualify becouse you are in college. good luck.References :
